Plant Imports – What’s In a Name?

USDA’s Animal & Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is moving to enforce a plant import requirement with respect to how plant taxa are listed on phytosanitary certificates (PC). The requirement itself is not new; it dates back to 2008. Yet, it has not been routinely enforced. Now, however, new automated processes are being implemented at the various APHIS plant inspection stations, and the new system automatically flags PCs that do not include the required taxonomic detail.
