‘TPS’ Provides the Latest Immigration Policy Drama

The latest immigration policy showdown is unfolding this week. The Department of Homeland Security is expected to announce as early as November 6 whether or not it will extend “temporary protected status” (TPS) for over 300,000 individuals who fled natural disasters or human conflict in El Salvador, Honduras, Haiti, and Nicaragua. The Central American TPS designations have been in place for nearly two decades, and more than half of the 195,000 Salvadorans and 57,000 Hondurans who have TPS protection have lived in the U.S. for more than 20 years.
