House Passes Two Get-Tough Immigration Bills; E-Verify Soon?

On June 29, the House of Representatives passed two immigration enforcement bills. One, the No Sanctuary for Criminals Act, seeks to broaden the types of federal support that localities could lose for failing to cooperate fully with federal immigration officials. The bill had mixed reviews among local law enforcement officials; it was opposed by the Fraternal Order of Police, and a letter by 40 police chiefs and sheriffs criticized the bill for “one-size-fits-all policies” on state and local law enforcement that could impede local law enforcement efforts to keep communities safe...
